First of all, it’s really, really hard to like a movie when you don’t like any of the characters. (And I mean any.) And it’s hard to like a movie when you don’t understand why anyone does anything. These people drink all day and spend money. (And do some drugs too.) One of them appears to have a part time job, but the rest of them just appear to be living off… uh, I don’t know what they’re living off of. Every single one of these people is a person I would avoid if I met them. Every. Single. One. What’s worse is they become progressively less likable.
And then there’s it’s use of film effects and “unconventional” narrative structure – which is hardly unconventional at this point – which just comes off as unpretentious.
You gotta give a movie kudos for being this difficult to like, though. I mean, that’s commitment.
And the thing is, though I want to hate this movie as I hate it’s characters, I can’t quite hate it. (I say ‘quite,’ because as it goes off the rails, it really goes off the rails.) But there’s a lot going on, some of which is thought-provoking. For example, a concussion plays a very prominent role in the film and I can’t honestly remember seeing a film like this where an obvious concussion plays such a prominent part in the action. And that’s something. Also, I’m all for films that switch genres at will. And, if there’s one thing I can say for it, it’s that they allude to the genre switch from very, very early on, and that’s not something that most of these genre-switching films do. So there’s that.
Still, I don’t like this movie.
