Breaking a Monster (2015, Luke Meyer)

This film about a tween-age metal band made up of black kids from Brooklyn made me feel much the same way as watching one of those beauty pageant documentaries though these kids actually want to play music.

There is a real question to be asked about whether or not these kids are being exploited. The movie dances around it which is both to its credit – I like when a film doesn’t tell us what to think – and also a problem – I worry the filmmakers may have bought into these kids (and what Sony and their manager claim to think about them) a little too much.

The film is an interesting portrait of what no doubt happens too much nowadays: a group gets some YouTube fame and people with power and money try to exploit the situation.
