1913 in Movies

Movie reviews I’ve written for films released theatrically in 1913.

1. “Suspense,” directed by Phillips Smalley, Lois Weber (9/10)

I’m sure this is great, but I don’t remember why I loved it.

2. “The Voyage of the Bourrichon Family,” directed by Georges Melies (6/10)

Melies’ final film. The early parts of this print are so damaged as to make it virtually unwatchable.

The film behind this problem appears to be fairly typical late Melies: more polished but less inventive, too much film for not enough material, etc.

Once that goes away, we are left with a late Melies movie that is mildly amusing but nothing more.
