Riley Goes to Colombia Day 9 – February 18, 2016

Everything goes to shit…literally

Please know that the following may not be something you want to read so if you’re grossed out, maybe wait for Day 10. NSFW as they say.

I had been having some rather weird shits for about 24 hours, since that last ceviche in Cartagena but I had otherwise been feeling fine. But in the wee hours of this morning things got a lot worse.

I woke up in the middle of the night with a weird pain in my chest. I thought I’d been lying on my sunburn or something. Also, I had to shit. So I took a shit and it was pure liquid. The rest of the night I had crazy fever dreams about some weird real estate deal (or something) I had in Medellin and how I owed something to somebody and, in between. I was up multiple times in the night, more times than I can remember to…uh…

The pain in my chest? Gas. I was able to burp a few times but and that helped a little.

The good news is that I had been given a prescription from my doctor for this very eventuality so I was at least able to start taking antibiotics right in the middle of it. In the morning I was able to get food down and Jenn went out to get me bananas, ginger ale and other things.

We were supposed to go Guatape this day but I couldn’t handle a bus ride, let alone the metro ride. But, in part due to my fever dreams, I was a little panicky about doing anything else the rest of the trip.

Fortunately, after breakfast I started to feel better and I had no fever. We went out for lunch and I got soup. We had our worst problem with Spanish as I accidentally ordered a combo. however, since the meal cost under CAD$20 total, it was hardly a big deal.

Otherwise, I spent most of the day in bed, drinking water and powerade and eating bananas. And watching movies, most of which I’ve seen before (some multiple times):

  • Escape from Alcatraz
  • Avengers
  • A Man Apart
  • Dick Tracy (Dick Tracy!!!)

We had dinner around the corner, and I was able to eat solid food.
