Iron Man 2 (2010, Jon Favreau)

Everyone told me this was the bad Iron Man movies and i think they were right.

SPOILERS if there can be.

Though I saw the first movie years after it came out I feel like it was a blast of fresh air. For how good Christopher Nolan’s reinterpretation of Batman was, it sure took itself seriously. So, as much as the shtick became pretty tired given how much the MCU relied on it, it was a breath of fresh air.

I haven’t watched the first one in a few years, but this feels very much like an inferior movie from memory. There’s definitely a sense of deja vu, even though this time the bad guy on the “inside” is not quite on the inside and not quite as bad as the firs time. So I guess that’s different.

But so much of the film feels like “here we go again”. And the parts that are meant to feel fresh feel extra ridiculous. Like the whole Monaco thing, I’m not really sure what the point of it is except it’s a thing people are vaguely aware about it. It feels gimmicky is what I’ trying to say.

Maybe it’s because I’ve seen the vast majority of MCU movies first, so what was maybe not quite cliche in 2010 feels like cliches to me in 2020. And if that’s true, it would certainly be unfair of me to judge it. But it just feels stale to me, and noting about it feels particularly compelling. Like we know what’s going to happen with Mickey Rourke’s character and Rockwell’s character and there’s just no suspense about who’s going to win. Of course, some of that comes from having seen so many MCU movies, and knowing who is in them, but I can’t help but feel that way.

Meh.
